Operations Update

Dear DAPCEP Community:

The COVID-19 global pandemic has forced us to put safety first and rethink how we learn, work, and go about our daily lives.  We sympathize with all who have been impacted by this vicious virus. In addition, we stand with everyone in the declaration for justice and equity — a cause that DAPCEP has championed for more than 40 years.

We remain in compliance with Gov. Whitmer’s Stay Home/Stay Safe Executive Order.  While our office will remain closed through Friday, June 26, the entire DAPCEP team is working remotely and can be reached by phone or email to address your questions or concerns.

Despite the many dramatic changes in our world, our commitment to providing quality STEM educational programming to underrepresented students remains constant. What will evolve, however, is how we deliver that programming. If COVID-19 has taught us anything, it’s that the world is going to need more scientists, engineers, and researchers to support our communities.

Thanks to all of the parents for sharing your feedback via our survey last month. 93% of parents need more academic content to supplement students’ schoolwork.  71% say that virtual instruction from a teacher would be helpful.

DAPCEP Explorers (Pre-K to third grade) engage in a hands-on lesson in oil spill cleanup.

Our Summer Camps for 4th – 12th graders are scheduled to begin June 20. Virtual courses include: Entrepreneurism, Electrical Connections, math activities, SAT Bootcamp, and a Drone Certification program with Grow Detroit’s Young Talent (GDYT). We will follow all state mandates. Enroll using this link by June 19https://dapcep.asapconnected.com/default.aspx

Together with Michigan universities, corporations, and nonprofits, the DAPCEP team is working on the strategic development of an online platform to include live and on-demand classes. Our fall core programming will include: Explorers (Pre-K to 3rd grade) Saturday Series; Pathfinders (4th to 12th grade) Saturday Series; Summer Channel; DAPCEP In-School Curriculum (DISC) adapted to individual school needs; Pop-Up STEM Program; Steps-to-Success college preparation and Multi-Year Engagement Program for the exploration of renewable energy. We are requesting STEM industries to host virtual field trips, STEM Days, PopUp courses, STEM Challenges, mentoring sessions, and Career Chats.

DAPCEP Pathfinders (4th to 12th grade) explore buoyancy through an interactive exercise.

We’re excited to be part of Crains Days of Giving campaign. We humbly ask you to support DAPCEP with your generous contribution using this link: https://maydaysofgiving.crainsdetroit.com/story/Dapcep2020. This campaign runs through June 20. DAPCEP has also been selected to participate in the Rocket Mortgage Classic’s Birdies4Charity program. Supporters can pledge funds for every birdie or a flat donation through July 2nd using this link: https://partnerhq.com/public/events/rocket-mortgage-classic-2020/organization_partnerships/1163.

Be on the lookout for DAPCEP emails, visit our website for programming updates. So many students, parents, and supporters have contributed to the DAPCEP story, and for that we are grateful. When historians look back on the year 2020, it’s my hope they will share the myriad stories of how we rolled up our sleeves and adapted to a stark new reality with speed, ingenuity, and – most importantly – compassion.

Michelle L. Reaves

DAPCEP Executive Director
